What is this newsletter?
Derrick G-Mail should feel like an email from me to you. It’s a place when I can explore my thoughts on current music releases, trends and ideas. It’s a place to expand the universe I’ve created and share things that inspire me outside of (but connected to) music. The newsletter comprises of:
🖋️ Monthly Essay: on the first of every month, Derrick publishes an essay (available to all subscribers) musing on music trends and culture
🖼️ The Permanent Collection: a weekly entry of Derrick’s favourite songs in the world. Paid subscribers get an additional songs, a playlist and access to the archive of songs
🥏 Solid Air: an hour-long, weekly radio show, available to paid subscribers. Watch the embedded video stream or listen to the private RSS audio stream
Who is Derrick Gee?
A music fan is probably the best way to describe me. Maybe DJ, radio host and content creator also.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have built a like-minded audience of music fans who are interested in every and all genres, and the nuances around their impact, relevance and interaction with culture. “Music history” is often what I talk about. “New music is music that is new to you” is a philosophy I promote daily. You can find me on TikTok, Instagram and you can listen to my podcast “Derrick Gee Speaks Volumes” on your fav podcast app and YouTube.
I’ve been a radio resident on London’s NTS Radio and Spiritland and North America’s SiriusXM. I’ve also been collecting and exploring music stories since I was young.
Why should you care? I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I’ve learned since building my channels, that people like how I think. That I don’t gate keep. That I am open minded. That I’m willing to learn and willing to understand sub-cultures that are foreign to me, and do my best to find the best in any and all of it.
