100% agree with this. It could also be said that now hip hop has been around long enough to get it's own version of the "rock is dead" tropes that have been going on for decades!

people love to call something to be over don't they!

Hip hop is not dead. It just spread around like peanut butter on toast. Just because the breads used are different kinds, it doesn't make it any less peanut butter. Hip hop is very much alive in the latin world, just this week I was watching young underground battle rappers, with a huge crowd, going at in Peru. I agree the most exciting hip-hop today is mainly from female rappers. Thinking about hip-hop in generations is kind of genius. I'm a Gen 2 Kpop fan, and a Gen 6 hip-hop fan.

Love the culinary references as always plus your use of metaphor and simile are chef’s kiss 🤌🏻 I think your take on the click bait speed of music “news” vs the actual holistic story is spot on too. The flesh of new gen music is built on the flavourful bones of hip hop 🫡

great read!! what about drill? also sample drill? (a thing still maybe?)

Derrick Gee's avatar

As in - in the future?

bee choi's avatar

oh haha i meant i thought drill was missing in the list of gens. and specifically think maaaybe sample drill could fit in as another bullet point under the gen 6 era

Derrick Gee's avatar

Yes true. It should’ve been in maybe 4/5 cos I had UK drill in 5. Ps I like how you adopted the use of generations in your reply hahaha
